    92 or another language at home 91 Anna Lohe Woolworths Head of Brand said Christmas in Australia is a social eating occasion It s about a table full of delicious fresh food surrounded by the people you love While almost all of our customers will celebrate Christmas in some way this year we know that their Christmas celebrations are unique driven by different cultural and food influences Traditional carols and images often paint the picture of a white Christmas but the Australian reality is typically a hot summer day spent outdoors often around the BBQ at the beach or playing cricket Warmer conditions are also reflected in what we eat at Christmas with a lot of customers opting for seafood and salad rather than or as well as the traditional roast The Woolworths Australian Christmas Survey found that of the Australians who celebrate Christmas 96 will have a special meal on or around Christmas day with 55 expected to attend more than two meal gatherings and one in five attending more than three The average size of a Christmas gathering is ten people with two in three Australian s preferring to host their Christmas event in the backyard and 61 likely to fire up the BBQ Two in three Australians will plan their Christmas meal at least one month in advance with 58 willing to try new recipes and 45 interested in trying new cuisines Prawns ham Pavlova and fresh fruit continue to be popular at Christmas but our customers are also looking for inspiration They are more inclined than ever to experiment with new flavours and cuisines With most of our customers already starting to plan or at least think about their Christmas meal we are focused on offering inspiration and great quality fresh food as well as unbeatable

    from the Marine Stewardship Council MSC the world s leading certification and labelling program for sustainable seafood The announcement means prawns fished from the Northern Prawn Fishery can now carry the internationally recognised MSC mark a symbol to customers that the seafood they are purchasing is from a certified sustainable fishery The Northern Prawn Fishery covers 771 000 square kilometres of the Timor Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria from the top of Cape York westwards to Cape Londonderry in Western Australia The area is home to a wealth of species including white banana brown tiger and blue endeavour prawns Woolworths General Manager of Fresh Food Pat McEntee said Woolworths had provided 25 000 to the Northern Prawn Fishery to help with the certification process We know that MSC certification takes a significant amount of time and resources so we were pleased to be able to assist the Northern Prawn Fishery in successfully completing the process that will ultimately lead to our customers having a wider choice of sustainable seafood to choose from We congratulate the staff and management of the Northern Prawn Fishery in achieving MSC certification Australians love prawns for Christmas and this festive season Woolworths will sell more than 400 000 kilos of banana prawns sourced from the Northern Prawn Fishery Seafood is an integral part of Woolies fresh food offer and has never been more popular But in order for it to stay that way we all need to play our part in keeping our oceans healthy maintaining sustainable fish stocks and ensuring a viable fishing industry said McEntee Woolworths announced its sustainable fish sourcing strategy last year with the long term goal of sourcing all its seafood from sustainable sources As part of this strategy Woolworths has introduced a number of MSC certified Select products including
