    Food Fresh Food Update Fresh or Free Guarantee Fresh Magazine Meet Our Growers Growers Stories Send to a friend Print Cherryhill Stephen Riseborough is a third generation cherry farmer With his brother Glenn he runs the family business Cherryhill one of the Australia s leading cherry producers Stephen s grandfather George established the first Cherryhill orchard at Wandin in 1940 George s son Cliff and his wife Sylvia built up the business and now their sons have taken the reins Cherryhill now has three orchards in Victoria the original farm at Wandin another property at Cobram in the far north of the state and a third at Tolmie in the Victorian highlands Three properties in different regions of Victoria mean Cherryhill have a long supply season Harvest starts with Cobram where it gets hotter and the fruit ripens first then moves on to picking at Wandin and finally Tolmie About 300 hectares across the three properties are under cherries and depending on the season they ll produce more than 1 million kilograms Within five years Cherryhill aims to treble production to about 3 million kilograms of sweet plump cherries a season Depending on the season Cherryhill will harvest between 20 and 40 varieties across its three orchards The sorting and packing happens at Wandin Cherries destined for Woolworths stores are packed in 5kg boxes with a special modified atmosphere bag to keep them in tip top shape and they re on their way to Woolies as soon as possible Stephen s fresh tip Cherries don t continue to ripen after they re picked so keep them in a paper or plastic bag in the fridge until you re ready to enjoy them Share on Facebook Tweet this Bookmark at Delicious Digg this Share this page on Specials Promotions Weekly Catalogue

    that now produces the most and most innovative varieties of cultivated mushrooms in Australia To date Costa Mushrooms have been supplying Woolworths with harvests of fresh pre packed mushrooms for about 6 years although the business has been trading under various names for the last 20 years At Costa we do everything from spawning to growing right through to distribution It s fantastic because it allows us complete control Currently we have farms at Casuarina in WA Monarto in SA North MacLean in QLD Glen Aplin in QLD Mittagong in NSW Mernda in VIC Yarrambat in VIC Huon Valley in TAS and Spreyton in TAS However with all of those operations we still can t completely satisfy demand so we have forged strong relationships with third party growers who help us meet our customer s needs In ideal conditions the time taken from picking to being delivered into a Woolworth s distribution Centre can be as short as 6 hours That means that the fresh mushrooms on Woolies shelves could have been in the ground less than 24 hours previously When James looks at a mushroom he sees a great example of the beauty of design in nature and much more Not only are they healthy for people they re healthy for the soil which in turn leads to healthy food for plants The first step in the process is creating the growing soil Each week several hundred tonnes of wheat straw is composted outdoors This is then brought indoors and undesirable pests are removed The straw is then kept at ideal conditions and continues composting After another week the chosen variety of mushroom seed is added and left to grow for 16 days Then a layer of soil is placed on top which encourages the mushrooms to start popping out The mushrooms are hand picked and placed directly into punnets so they re only handled once before being wrapped The pickers only select the best quality mushrooms and the punnets are quickly covered with a high tech wrap dotted with micro perforations These perforations allow the mushrooms to breathe and reduce deterioration Afterwards the used compost is returned to the earth my mixing it into topsoil and distributing it to garden centres Mushrooms are nature s recyclers every week we recycle 1500 tonnes of agricultural straw in Victoria alone James Fuller When he s not helping grow mushrooms for Woolworths at Costa James loves taking his kids into the bush to identify the safe mushrooms they can take home to cook or preserve or growing them at home for his family and friends In fact James looks at fungi as an entire kingdom in itself with the different varieties providing countless possibilities When it comes to eating James singles out the Portobello as his favourite A large flat mushroom they have a meaty texture and robust flavour You can BBQ them with oil salt herbs have them stuffed baked or add them to minestrone or pasta dishes They re
