    At the peak of the wool boom the fibre famously fetched a pound a pound This triggered a spending spree by farmers on fertilisers tractors motor cars and other products The boom was short lived 1973 Today in so many places the cult of bigness is worshipped I like to think that at Wesfarmers we have kept before us the importance of the individual either as a shareholder staff man or customer breaks records After implementing a streamlined handling process which was described by the chairman of the Federal Joint Wool Selling Organisation as almost perfect the Wesfarmers wool department reached a major milestone 100 000 bales of wool sold in a single season Renowned for having the longest serving staff of any department Wesfarmers wool was the domain of people like Laurie Green Vern for Wesfarmers to get to the point where it was selling 100 000 bales of wool in one season for the first time Yet only four years later in 1968 it reached the 200 000 mark 1968 Earthmoving Executive and General Manager 1974 1984 He knew what was going on in the Middle East and he knew what was going on in the European markets he had a network of relationships which extended Wesfarmers years Hugh Warden travelled all over the State as Wesfarmers livestock manager classing hundreds of thousands of sheep and cattle He was an expert in stud stock and the driving force behind the rural advancement program which encouraged farmers to consider alternative sources of income and urged them to introduce sustainable farming methods Over time Wesfarmers decided I didn t have much future in Wesfarmers into a pacesetting corporate performer with a market capitalisation of 650 million 1984 Going public Going public By the late 1970s Wesfarmers was outgrowing its co operative roots A restructure was required to pass its accumulated wealth to members and ensure it didn t fall prey to the corporate raiders that were beginning to flourish When it listed on the Australian Associated Stock Exchanges on 15 November 1984 Wesfarmers employed a unique founder s share which guaranteed the co op s farmer members retained control On listing it had a market capitalisation of 80 million The Co operative retained 60 of the ordinary shares and the rest were distributed to its members By 2001 further restructures would see Wesfarmers entirely farewell its co operative legacy to become a freely traded publicly listed company with open ownership 1984 Shirley Byrne Shirley Byrne Veteran Wesfarmers shareholder Shirley Byrne bought her first Wesfarmers shares in 1984 and since then she
