  • Firing Breakers outplay VicSpirit - VicSpirit
The Breakers however made their approach clear early with Alyssa Healy 35 getting her team off to a rocketing start with five boundaries inside the first five overs of play Looking to take back the ascendency the home team made some important inroads when Kristen Beams 1 30 took the key wicket of Healy and Briana Binch 2 31 dismissed Naomi Stalenberg for nine to bring the NSW score to 3 64 Despite the loss of wickets the Breakers momentum with the bat continued as Blackwell and Ellyse Perry 39 set in at the crease Going at just under nine runs per over in the first 10 overs the Breakers pair were hitting the ball cleanly and taking on a VicSpirit bowling attack that had previously had the better of them over the past two days The in form Blackwell went on to bring up her half century in the 19th over as she combined with Perry in an 87 run fourth wicket partnership to set VicSpirit a target of 158 runs to win In response the VicSpirit were rocked with the wickets of big hitting trio Elyse Villani 3 Jess Cameron 7 and Meg Lanning 5 who all fell before the end of the 7th over With the score at 3 37 and a major task ahead Kelly Applebee 23 toiled hard at the crease to get the Victorians innings off the ground But the wickets continued to tumble as Erin Osborne 3 15 had Emma Inglis caught playing across the line for 13 and Applebee bowled at the halfway point of the NSW bowling innings Young talent Anna Lanning came out to a cauldron of pressure in the middle with VicSpirit needing 97 runs off 58 balls to steal the win She stuck her way to career best

  • Career best Strano leads the way - VicSpirit
sense of déjà vu to yesterday s WT20 encounter when Alex Blackwell 81 was left to salvage the NSW innings once again She combined with Leah Poulton 34 for a 100 run partnership to put the Breakers back in command at 3 154 But an interesting tactic to hold Strano back from the bowling attack until the 32nd over paid dividends as she combined with Beams to restrict the NSW set batters Poulton fell victim to the pressure built by the VicSpirit spin twins as Strano had her top edging a sweep shot that was caught by Kearney at fine leg in the 36th over The Poulton wicket set off a major NSW batting collapse as Strano stuck again to remove the dangerous Blackwell two overs later The Breakers lost seven wickets for 75 runs as Strano ripped through their batting line up in a masterclass of off spin bowling to restrict NSW to a below par total of 10 229 from 49 5 overs Despite the good showing with the ball for the Victorians a rocky start with the bat saw them lose Elyse Villani 8 Nicole Bolton 15 and Jess Cameron 4 inside the first nine overs to leave them in a precarious position at 3 63 With their backs to the wall and the Breakers pressing for another breakthrough to open up the VicSpirit tail Meg Lanning and Applebee held firm Their ability to pierce the field and turn over the strike kept them from being tied down and allowed them to alleviate the pressure built early by a rampaging NSW bowling attack The Victorian duo proceeded to launch a lethal counter attack soon after which saw them combine for 22 fours and two sixes to amass a record breaking WNCL 149 run fourth wicket partnership At

  • Villani and Applebee pull off thrilling win - VicSpirit
18th over scoring successive boundaries to relieve the pressure before Julie Hunter 1 31 had her caught deep at mid off the following ball When Strano claimed Megan Banting for a duck the very next over the Fury had slumped to a modest 4 124 with eight balls remaining in the innings But a destructive late innings cameo from keeper Jenny Wallace 37 which included two sixes and 25 runs being scored off the final over of the innings helped set up a daunting total of 3 151 for the undefeated Victorians to run down In the chase the Victorians were jolted early by the loss of captain Meg Lanning one who was caught magnificently by Edwards at cover off the bowling of Emma Biss 2 22 Just three overs later the attacking Jess Cameron was out for nine when she struck a Triscari 1 29 delivery straight to Banting at mid off to leave VicSpirit in trouble at 2 32 Despite the early struggles for the Victorians Villani looked in free flowing form finding the boundary eight times inside the first eight overs of the innings to keep VicSpirit on track in the run chase Nicole Bolton at the other end struggled to find her feet when she came to the crease however facing two LBW shouts before she was bowled playing across the line for a sluggish seven off 17 deliveries At 3 65 in the tenth over the Victorians required a further 87 runs with 63 balls remaining as Applebee walked her way to the crease Villani went on to bring up her half century in the 11th over but the required rate rose to ten an over with five overs raining at the end of the 15th With their backs against the wall the Victorians played

one end captain Meg Lanning struggled to find her rhythm at the other and eventually fell for just two off 14 deliveries when Emma Biss 1 25 had her edging through to wicket keeper Jenny Wallace Despite the loss of Lanning Cameron counter punched when she came to the crease hitting four successive boundaries off Biss in the ninth over As Villani took the back seat Cameron continued to play the aggressor in the second wicket partnership striking two massive sixes including one to bring up her half century off just 36 deliveries With a platform laid at 1 112 and just four overs remaining both batsmen looked set for a big end to the innings But a hiccup saw Villani and Cameron both depart in the space of just four deliveries as Melissa Holmes 1 27 and Emma King 1 36 struck to give the Western Fury some hope An opportunity to restrict the VicSpirit late in the innings went begging however as Kelly Applebee 18 and former West Australian Nicole Bolton 9 hit 23 runs off the final two overs to bring the Victorians total to 3 151 In response the West Australians got off to a damaging start of 0 57 led by international batsman Charlotte Edwards 46 who impressively flayed Strano for 16 runs in the fourth over of the innings The Victorians were scrambling early and struggled to maintain the Western Fury openers leaking 11 boundaries inside seven overs before Kristen Beams 1 17 got the vital breakthrough of Chloe Piparo for 14 The game looked poised for a tight finish but when Strano returned to the bowling crease she made her presence felt taking two wickets in two balls to send Heather Graham 5 and Wallace 0 back to the batting shed The two
