France there is youth and there is experience Other than a woeful display against England in the last round of last year s championship and a narrow loss to South Africa in November the green machine seems to be gathering some momentum Ireland is certainly the roughie in this year s competition If they can sneak past Wales in round one they have home fixtures against England and France Could this be Ireland s year I don t think so They will fall short but then again Ronan O Gara is the master of the drop goal Coach Declan Kidney Captain Jamie Heaslip No 8 Superstars Brian O Driscoll Outside Centre Bolter Craig Gilroy Wing Fullback Prediction If you are game Champions 4 50 Sportsbet but I would sit it out Wales The reigning 6 Nations champions had an extremely poor autumn series having lost to Argentina Samoa New Zealand and Australia Seven consecutive losses after a great Rugby World Cup campaign that could ve finished very differently if Sam Warburton wasn t red carded in the first few minutes A convincing 6 Nations last year left Welsh rugby on a serious high However some mediocre rugby that can t be blamed on weather a host of injuries and some underperforming provincial unions really leave the Welsh with their backs against the walls Now is there time to stand up They have some experienced campaigners and a monstrous backline that is blessed with pace so if the forward lay the platform and Leigh Halfpenny kicks his goals they shouldn t be too far off the pace but you would expect that they should fall short to the in form teams England and France Coach Rob Howley Warren Gatland is on Lions duty Captain Sam Warburton Flanker Superstar Toby Faletau Number 8 Rising Star Justin Tipuric Flanker Prediction Wales have the team to spring a few upsets but 2013 won t be their year Scotland 2012 was a year of one up and many downs for Scotland rugby given they lost all 6 Nations fixtures and experienced disappointing losses to South Africa New Zealand and Tonga The upside was that they managed to upset an understrength Australia in Newcastle during a midweek game in conditions that resembled something very similar to the dreary and wet Murrayfield Scott Johnson the interim head coach has added ten uncapped players to help reinvigorate Scottish rugby and picked 19 Glasgow warriors players to ensure that as many combinations that play week in and week out provincially can tackle some of the world s best on the international stage The best partnerships are usually developed at provincial level The likes of Ma a Nonu and Conrad Smith Hurricanes Justin Marshall and Andrew Mehrtens Crusaders Jean de Villiers and Jacque Fourie Stormers The transition to the international stage is made that much easier for players given there are already established foundations based on trust and effective communication and senior players that can show the way Scotland has

a revelation this season and look like the team to beat Top ladder position is available to the Hawks if they are good enough and apart from the same sort of hiccups that the Swans suffer in occasional games they look like premiership material Because of slight inconsistencies in big games picking the winner of this match is pretty tough Swans by 10 Line Swans 2 5 West Coast Eagles 1 72 vs Collingwood Magpies 2 15 Patersons Stadium Saturday August 25 5 40pm Recent clashes Collingwood 12 13 85 defeated West Coast 12 10 82 round 13 2012 at the MCG Game preview 5th plays 4th in what is expected to be another great game of football The Eagles just need to beat the Pies and 4th spot is theirs Collingwood has looked a bit fragile at times and travelling to Perth to play West Coast is a difficult task for every team Both teams are getting back players from their injury list and also both teams suffer from ineffective forward lines in crunch games Go figure Collingwood likes the tough games and they travel well Magpies by 20 Line Magpies 4 5 Gold Coast Suns 15 00 vs Carlton Blues 1 02 Metricon Stadium Saturday August 25 7 40pm Recent clashes Carlton 26 15 171 d Gold Coast 7 10 52 round 2 2011 at the Gabba Game preview The Blues won by 95 points last week playing a team that spent significant time in the top 4 This week they play the Suns in a lay down misere result and it s a matter of picking the margin Carlton will keep pressure on Fremantle to sneak back into the top 8 after winning this game and they have a better percentage Blues by 55 Line Suns 66 5 Geelong Cats 1 01 vs Western Bulldogs 17 00 Simonds Stadium Sunday August 26 1 10pm Recent clashes Geelong 14 11 95 d Western Bulldogs 11 9 75 round 9 2012 at Etihad Stadium Game preview The Cats are playing well at the right time of the season and this game against the Western Bulldogs will help them keep that winning form going The Bulldogs have been super disappointing this season and the best thing the management can do is blame the coach Regardless of blame they won t win this game Cats by 30 Line Bulldogs 70 5 North Melbourne Kangaroos 1 42 vs Fremantle Dockers 2 90 Etihad Stadium Sunday August 19 3 15pm Recent clashes North Melbourne 21 17 143 d Fremantle 6 9 45 round 22 2011 at Etihad Stadium Game preview Based on the positions of these teams this is an important game more so for Fremantle than North although North is looking for a top 4 position if any of the teams above falter Fremantle just has to win to stay in the 4 simple arithmetic and strategy for them A loss will cost them a finals place because of the win Carlton

were well beaten so based on form ok losing form maybe the Giants can win back to back A flip of the coin maybe needed Giants by 1 Line Giants 17 5 Sydney Swans 1 52 vs Collingwood Magpies 2 55 ANZ Stadium Saturday August 11 7 40pm Recent clashes Collingwood 13 21 99 d Sydney Swans 14 9 93 round 14 2011 at ANZ Stadium Game preview Top of the ladder plays 3rd and you can t argue about the form of the Sydney Swans They have been unbeatable for 9 weeks and Collingwood is standing in their way of making that 10 in a row But the Pies present a big hurdle for that 10th Sydney win as history has shown that the Magpies have had the wood over the Swans particularly at ANZ Stadium over the years The Swans eventually have to lose one don t they Just to even things up Collingwood have suspended their best player Dane Swan for drinking alcohol outside of allowed hours Swans by 25 Line Swans 12 5 Carlton Blues 1 20 vs Brisbane Lions 4 60 Etihad Stadium Saturday August 11 7 40pm Recent clashes Carlton 23 16 154 d Brisbane Lions 9 9 63 round 2 2012 at the Gabba Game preview It s suggested that Ratten s tenure at the Blues will be over at the end of the season and there is already talk of Carlton easily making top 4 next season Just as they easily will win the premiership in 2012 They like St Kilda can still make the 8 and beating the Brisbane Lions in this match will be one small step towards that goal Blues by 20 Line Lions 31 5 Hawthorn Hawks 1 01 vs Port Adelaide 17 00 Aurora Stadium Sunday August 12 1 10pm Recent clashes Hawthorn 16 12 108 d Port Adelaide 9 8 62 round 11 2012 at AAMI Stadium Game preview The first coach of 2012 has taken a bullet for the team as Primus departs the Power and it s hoped he celebrates with a good night s sleep because Port Adelaide has been his personal nightmare all year The Hawthorn juggernaut was finally spiked last week by Geelong but that loss and Buddy s car accident notwithstanding they will be in the mood to give the Power a bit of a touch up this week Hocking the new stand in coach at Port Adelaide has taken over for the last 4 games so his nightmares are just starting Hawks by 100 Line Hawks 80 5 Richmond Tigers 1 16 vs Western Bulldogs 5 25 MCG Sunday August 12 3 15pm Recent clashes Western Bulldogs 23 15 153 d Richmond 18 10 118 in round eight 2011 at Etihad Stadium Game preview The Tigers got themselves back into the winning circle last week and there s nothing to suggest that the form of the Western Bulldogs is good enough to break that Tiger ring The Bulldogs need

one but they would have to play out of their skins to top West Coast who is working hard to get back in the top 4 which they must do to have a chance at the flag Stakes are high for both teams but the Eagles look just that little bit better across the ground Eagles by 25 Line Eagles 17 5 Collingwood Magpies 1 40 vs St Kilda Saints 3 00 MCG Saturday August 4 7 40pm Recent clashes Collingwood 14 5 89 d St Kilda 10 10 70 round 21 2011 at Etihad Stadium Game preview The Saints thrashed the Bulldogs last week and the Pies annihilated the Giants so the two teams bring a bit of form into this match albeit both sides lost the week before that Collingwood looks to be getting some players back that have been missing of late and the Pies need to find something extra in the contested possessions if they want to beat St Kilda and maintain their position in the top 4 The Saints have a lot to play for A loss in this game and a win to North places their finals chances in serious jeopardy Magpies by 18 Line Magpies 15 5 Brisbane Lions 2 25 vs Richmond Tigers 1 65 The Gabba Saturday August 4 7 40pm Recent clashes Richmond 18 17 125 d Brisbane Lions 14 10 94 round 13 2011 at the Gabba Game preview This game is one of the tough ones to tip but you could do sillier things than put a few dollars on the Richmond Tigers to win by 3 points Richmond loves to lose close ones and they have a great opportunity to make it 4 close losses from 4 consecutive games if they put their mind to it Brisbane copped a caning from West Coast last week but apart from that result they haven t been travelling too badly You can estimate that Richmond missed the finals by no more than 2 goals Both teams are on the same number of wins Tigers by 10 Line Tigers 7 5 Melbourne Demons 1 33 vs Gold Coast Suns 3 30 MCG Sunday August 5 1 10pm Recent clashes Melbourne 17 10 112 d Gold Coast 12 10 82 round 23 2011 at the MCG Game preview The match between the cellar dwellers is one that is difficult to pick not only because of their ladder positions but also because neither team is bringing any winning form into the game The Suns have a realistic chance of winning this and if the game was at Metricon there would be no hesitation to tip them The MCG can be a bit daunting at times for young players The Dees are really a basket case this season and it s hard to see where they are heading The game probably won t reach great heights but the teams both have reasons to win Suns by 12 Line Suns 21 5 Carlton Blues 3

40pm Recent clashes First Meeting Game preview Collingwood has one of the lowest percentages in the top 4 and it would be nice if they could despatch the Giants by 100 points or more It would also be nice to see the Dawk and the Cloak come into a few goals albeit against mediocre opposition It s impossible to tip GWS in this game Let s move on Magpies by 100 Line Magpies 90 5 Carlton Blues 2 18 vs Richmond Tigers 1 67 MCG Saturday July 28 7 40pm Recent clashes Carlton 18 17 125 d Richmond 12 9 81 round one 2012 at the MCG Game preview The Tigers promised so much this season as did Carlton and here we are in round 18 wondering whether either team will make the finals Richmond suffered two agonizingly close defeats in its last 2 rounds and those results have determined their fate They need to make a statement and beating the Blues who have been decimated by injury and suspension is one way of doing it Carlton s finals hopes hang by a thread Tigers by 22 Line Tigers 7 5 Gold Coast Suns 10 00 vs Sydney Swans 1 05 Metricon Stadium Saturday July 28 7 40pm Recent clashes Sydney Swans 15 16 106 d Gold Coast 4 12 36 round 16 2011 at Metricon Stadium Game preview This is just what the Swans needed An easy game and a possible percentage booster not The Suns have improved their results quite a bit in the past couple of weeks with a win and a narrow loss to Brisbane but even at Metricon it s hard to see them challenge Sydney too much The Swans have worked very hard to get to top position and will not let that slip too easily Swans by 75 Line Swans 50 5 Port Adelaide Power 2 35 vs Fremantle Dockers 1 60 AAMI Stadium Sunday July 29 12 40pm Recent clashes Fremantle 12 15 87 defeated Port Adelaide 7 5 47 round 7 2012 at Patersons Stadium Game preview This is certainly no gimme for the Fremantle Dockers and it would be a tragedy to let a game like this which they would expect to win cause them ladder and finals concerns later on I think Freo will have to battle the Power all the way to win this game and a Port Adelaide win would not be surprising Pavlich is in great form so stopping him will be Port s priority Dockers by 35 Line Dockers 10 5 St Kilda Saints 1 16 vs Western Bulldogs 5 25 Etihad Stadium Sunday July 29 3 15pm Recent clashes St Kilda 15 13 103 defeated Western Bulldogs 5 10 40 round three 2012 at Etihad Stadium Game preview That final 8 position is still available and teams like St Kilda cannot drop games like this to the Western Bulldogs and possibly lose touch The Saints gave it everything against the Swans last week but

competed in Group 1 company Morant has been putting in some solid runs but 59kg is a huge disadvantage Can t have on this weight Spurcific was good last two starts but 56 5kg against this field might be too much Will be there for the places I feel for sure Jugahlation has gone backwards since that huge start to finish win three runs back Can t back here Vatican is another quality runner in this race hugely down in class Barrier 1 is solid and will get a perfect sit Only problem is that he hasn t returned at best this prep Nicholls Court is a horse we have all the time in the world for Can run some blistering sectionals and as long as settles middle of the pack will come home with a massive run Weighted well and has won 3 of 4 first up and only run on heavy with 2 wins 3 places from 6 at distance Confidence 85 Flemington Race 5 A very very touch race I wouldn t totally discount Tanby in this race Can stay for days and if the track is heavy will be more like a 1600 1700 run so could be suited With a win over Dance with Her second to Shewan and second to Dunaden in last five runs Tanby is all quality and has won first up before Parthian is an interesting runner 2 wins from 3 at Heavy 7 wins 7 places from 19 at distance and 2 wins from 5 second up Weighted normal here and could run very well Avienus is one I am now willing to discount over 1400 after last run on Heavy Folding Gear is an interesting runner Record shows 0 wins 1 place from 4 at distance but when you look to four runs back he ran 0 5L 4th here on a slow track at distance This puts him right in the mix off a great prep Big big chance here Secret Flyer s run was quite good in a much harder race at Caulfield last up Will get a nice run from barrier 1 and down 4kg coming into this race Loves the heavy running and could go very much Dusty Star comes into this with the best recent form of the race He put in a big run last start The only issue we have with Dusty here is a heavy track with an extra up in distance This will be a hard one to hold from start to finish Prince of Capers comes into this with 4 wins and 2 seconds from last 6 runs Won very well last start at course and 200m extra distance n a dead track so will be similar to this on a heavy Down 3kg in weight Looks the value Guru Bob had the most impressive last start run with a huge 0 1L loss to Club Command at Caulfield over Distance and on a Heavy 8 Off 52kg here
