to have their data transferred to a portable media device and is working to bring the service to nations other than the USA The new AWS Import Export service allows customers to send Amazon a USB 2 0 or eSATA device the latter is preferred Amazon will then transfer the required data to the portable device and ship it to customers Devices must have a US wall socket and consume 120 volts at 60 hertz Form factors up to and including 8U devices will be accepted but portable devices must not weigh more than 50 pounds The service is however currently available only to customers that use AWS US based data centres Customers using the company s European data centres are not included in the beta But a blog post announcing the service states We haven t forgotten our international users We re working on a number of solutions to enable international shipments to and from the US For now the company s FAQ says the beta only supports US based buckets and the ship from and ship to address must be located within the US although the company is already working on support for data stored in its European data centres The company has not however mentioned shipping costs for Australian or New Zealand users of the service which it touts as a cheaper and faster than downloading large quantities of data Whether the service retains that benefit when users add the cost of transporting portable storage devices to and from the South Pacific remains to be seen Dig Deeper on Professional storage services All News Manage The path to cloud ROI must be paved with clear expectations Public cloud architecture TwinStrata help one company avoid upgrade Logical Units Unisys storage assessment service EMC s new Avamar certification Storage security ignored says SNIA security lead Load More View All Public cloud architecture TwinStrata help one company avoid upgrade Logical Units Unisys storage assessment service EMC s new Avamar certification Storage security ignored says SNIA security lead EMC s cloud lost in fog of governmental sensitivities Load More View All News The path to cloud ROI must be paved with clear expectations View All Manage ADS BY GOOGLE Latest TechTarget resources CIO AU Security AU Data Backup Disaster Recovery SMB Storage Storage Channel Search CIO com au Internet of Things Food safety apps set to emerge Food safety could emerge as a key application for the Internet of Things in the coming months providing real time visibility in Cloud security culture a building block for today s businesses As organizations today move more data to the cloud it s important to cultivate a cloud security culture and enlist a CISO a new How to do an advanced data analytics project on the cheap Delivering an advanced data analytics project to the business can cost a fortune But with some imagination CIOs can do it for Search Security com au Weigh the benefits risks of going mobile in the enterprise Smartphone

but a missed opportunity to include storage systems in defence in depth strategies CHAP authentication is built into the iSCSIS protocol so you can authenticate the target and the initiator he says But if you ask folks who use it how many have turned it on it is only a very small percentage So part of the challenge for SNIA and the industry is to raise awareness so that users understand they have some options Hibbard also criticised some vendor approaches to storage security saying that current marketing around terms like data leakage prevention masks the fact that process not technology is the answer Maybe a small portion of the problem is technology oriented he says It speaks to huge issues with policies and processes If someone takes a disk out of an array and did not sanitise the media that s a process problem Future SCSI security Hibbard believes an important advance in storage security will shortly emerge from the Incits T10 committee The analogy I would give you is that in the world of HTML you saw several years ago where XML was the mechanism for data transfer and people got worried about securing the contents so they added encryption and so on I think we are seeing at the SCSI command level some very early work similar to that IU don t know what the transport is going to be it could be Fiber Channel over Ethernet But the one thing that is consistent is SCSI Another issue he is concerned about is long term archiving The security implications of the 100 year archive are frightening he says The encryption algorithms may have to be replaced three or four times over the life of the data How how do you ensure you have data authenticity under those circumstances We use digital signatures to do it now But in ten years the mechanism you use to verify that may have disappeared So how do you make sure the original access controls are maintained when everyone associated with the creation of that data is dead The building blocks to solve that problem are not even on the drawing board The IETF has basic work on digital signatures but I do not see a lot of work Dig Deeper on Professional storage services All News Manage The path to cloud ROI must be paved with clear expectations Public cloud architecture TwinStrata help one company avoid upgrade Logical Units Unisys storage assessment service EMC s new Avamar certification Amazon working to bring S3 portable storage device export feature to overseas customers Load More View All Public cloud architecture TwinStrata help one company avoid upgrade Logical Units Unisys storage assessment service EMC s new Avamar certification Amazon working to bring S3 portable storage device export feature to overseas customers EMC s cloud lost in fog of governmental sensitivities Load More View All News The path to cloud ROI must be paved with clear expectations View All Manage ADS BY GOOGLE Latest TechTarget
