    to keep track of what is in each carton As you begin packing keep these guidelines in mind To reduce your stress pack a few boxes a day starting several days or even weeks before the move Keep a log of what s in the boxes you pack and what room they go in Do one room at a time to make unpacking easier labelling each box with room and box number as you go Make sure the bottom of each box is sturdy enough to hold the contents When packing heavier items should be placed toward the bottom of the box Don t skimp on packing material More is better Keep the box s weight under 50 pounds and put heavier items in smaller containers to make them easier to carry Valuable items should be packed in front of the carrier or even by the carrier to be sure they are properly packed and identifiable Carrier packing generally costs extra How to Pack Specific Items Some items require special handling to make sure they arrive safely Follow these item specific tips for packing breakables Packing Plates and Bowls Use a medium sized box or a dish pack from your carrier Cover the bottom of the box with crumpled paper Pack three plates together in a bundle if they re breakable or six plates if they re sturdy For each bundle put the bottom plate on a stack of packing paper and pull the edges of a few sheets of paper up over the plate Set your second plate on the first plate that is covered in paper Pull the edges of more sheets up over the second plate Repeat the process with the third plate Turn the entire bundle over wrap it in paper again and seal it with packing tape Set the plates on their edges in the box Use the same technique for bowls and saucers Packing Cups Pack most cups two at a time However china and other fragile cups or glasses should be stuffed with crumpled packing paper and wrapped individually When packing ordinary cups start by putting your first cup six to eight inches from the corner of your paper Fold the closest corner up into the cup Place your second cup inside the first on top of the paper Fold the corners to either side into the top cup Holding the two cups together roll them toward the last corner Place the cups with the lip down in the box near the top Don t pack anything heavy on top of them Packing Glasses and Stemware Stuff the inside of glasses and stemware with crumpled paper Roll glass or stemware in packing paper diagonally then tuck the ends of the paper into the top of the glass or stemware Place the glass in a corrugated paper roll for additional protection Pack glasses near the top of the box Do not put heavy items on top of glasses or stemware Fragile glasses or stemware
