horse went lame at the last moment and he acted as groom for Rod and Sue in the 4 in Hand Driving Matt was to set the record straight just 2 years later at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 where he went on to win both the individual and the team Gold medals in the Australian Three Day Eventing team Heath has also been involved training riders from many other countries In 1998 Heath focussed up on coaching the Thai Eventing team and this team went on to win the Team Gold medal the Individual Silver medal and the Individual Bronze medal at the 1998 Asian Equestrian Games Riders come from all over the world to base and train with both Heath and Rozzie A huge number of Australia s leading riders have spent time working and training with Heath and Rozzie Heath is a great believer in winning and as a result has been involved with the Ryan s horse breeding program for some 30 years Basically Heath and Rozzie have raided the best genetics from all over the world and continued to bring them together in a program focused up wholly and solely on producing Gold Medal horses Producing Olympic horses is in Heath s opinion very different to producing commercial horses As a result horses like Utopian Cardinal are the aim and this does mean that young stock at Ryans are well bred but not always bred to be as immediately fancy as some of the horses which shine in young horse classes Bloodlines which Heath and Rozzie have incorporated include Donnerhall Rubinstein Angelo Jazz Ferro Florestan Weltmeyer Action Pik Bube and Consul Both Heath and Rozzie have a collection of perhaps the best staff in the world and they attribute this to the fact that no one is hired in the capacity of being a groom All staff outside the office are current riders training with everything they have to be Olympians Most week mornings start at 6am with Heath teaching one of the staff Most weekends will find Heath and Rozzie including most of the staff scattered across Australia competing The most unique aspect of Ryans at Newcastle Equestrian Centre in Heath s opinion is that this is perhaps realistically the only facility in the world that successfully nurtures under privileged young riders i e 18 26 year olds to Olympic performances Most Olympians are predominately produced by their parents in a program which can start seriously with a child as young as 12 years of age Usually a successful program revolves around coaching at least once a week by a high calibre coach For this to happen the family by good fortune just happens to live reasonably close to an elite coach The family also invests in schoolmaster horses and then high quality compettition horses as the child becomes more and more capable The program also is driven by the family taking the child to olympic discipline competitions on a regular basis This type

last time he ever strapped Without knowing what I was letting myself in for I came to Australia When I first arrived Heath and I worked from his parents stables in Blackhill NSW In 1983 Bob Judy Mitchell started the NSW Equestrian Centre at Lochinvar and Heath and I were involved there from the beginning and I fairly quickly made the transition to Dressage after forming a partnership with the wonderful STIRLING WILTON He was a very reluctant eventer but a fabulous dressage horse and with him I was part of the first Australian Dressage Team to travel overseas to the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm Sweden in 1990 My other horse Statford Sigismund owned by Barry Loiterton was travelling reserve for the same team 1995 competed at the European Dressage Championships on Shaun France s BARRINGTON OCK TEDI 1996 travelled back to Europe with Dr Margaret Evans horse EXELLENT I was lucky enough to stay and train at Stal Bartels Academy in The Netherlands with Tineke Bartels I returned to Europe again in 1997 with an Australian team to train firstly in Germany with Herr Herbert Rehbein and then back to Tineke Bartels 1999 EXELLENT won the Pacific League World Cup Final here in Australia and we travelled to Europe once again to s Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands but during the competition EXELLENT trod on a roofing nail in the arena resulting in him being taken to Utrecht Vet Hospital and ending the sad day on the operating table I am sure this incident did not help our Olympic dreams and we narrowly missed out on selection for the Australian Olympic Team in 2000 After EXELLENT I had two more great Grand Prix horses Robyn Horsley s wonderful horse ARGLEN KALEB who was sadly put down after a colic

has a great future in this Olympic arena as well as an eventer Emma is also particularly good with young horses and spends much of the day riding numerous youngsters which have just been broken in or youngsters which other people have experienced problems with and need untangling Emma is a top of the range competition rider and already has experienced enormous success on lots of different horses in both dressage and eventing Emma is an unusually passive rider yet extremely effective We feel that it is only a matter of time before Emma Armstrong is named on an Australian Olympic Team Emma accompanied Heath and Stirling Stilton in 2001 when Heath was on the Australian Dressage team competing in England at the European Dressage Championships trying to qualify Australia for the 2002 WEG to be held in Spain After this Australian tour was over Emma stayed on and trained in a straight dressage stable in Germany with Martina Hanover and also went to some major dressage shows including Munster From there she worked with some of the International Eventing Teams including Sweden and also spent time with Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Ryan Emma attended major 3DE championships such as Blenheim and Burgley in England and Punchestown in Ireland She was offered many job opportunities but passed them up to come home and pursue her own Olympic career Emma is very much supported by her parents Cam Winks Armstrong who have turned part of the Cassilis property into an agistment facility Interestingly enough their clientele is made up of the who s who in the equestrian industry Being west of the ranges young stock grow up in a worm free environment and the soil is rich and full of calcium and natural minerals and horses under the close supervision of

level and has on numerous occasions been in final Olympic trials here in Australia in contention for Olympic selection Most of Gordon s horses have been very honest but perhaps will not be remembered by history as being the most talented horses on the scene at the time Currently Gordon has some young horses which are purpose bred one for eventing and one for straight dressage This is the first time Gordon has prepared a campaign as carefully as this and he is hoping that the highlights of his career are just around the corner in the not too distant Olympics In between competing Gordon has developed great skills in the breaking in arena Gordon breaks in all the young horses for Heath and Rozzie and is sought after by outside clients as a breaker Gordon initially studied the Jefferies method of breaking under Maurice Wright and from there has evolved a system which is completely free of confrontation The focus of Gordon s system is on the horse s confidence and as a result Gordon produces horses free of injury or trauma Most breaking in processes involve tying up lessons which can be quite confrontational and this sort of thing is responsible for something like 90 of horses straining their sacro illiac ligament which gives the horse low grade back pain for the rest of their life Nothing anyone can do about that once the horse has sustained this injury In avoiding this almost inevitable breaking in injury Gordon is able to give Heath and Rozzie youngsters who are much more likely to achieve their potential than would otherwise be the case Gordon is also sought after by people who have high quality horses that have developed bad habits or horses that are somewhat short on a natural level
