  • Six-year anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires – Russell Northe
    Victoria To think that 173 lost their lives on that fateful day is so difficult to comprehend and in many communities the emotion and grief is still very raw Mr Northe said Within the Morwell electorate the impact of the Black Saturday bushfires and indeed the preceding Delburn complex of fires in January of 2009 were profound Hundreds of homes were razed assets lost stock destroyed and wildlife devastated Mr Northe said tragically 11 people were killed locally and last Saturday was an opportunity to remember reflect and mourn those loved ones On the day I was pleased to join with many local bereaved families in the opening of a memorial space in Victory Park Traralgon The memorial is located in a beautiful setting and it was wonderful to witness many families in attendance providing love and support for each other Whilst it is difficult to know precisely what to say to those families still grieving what I can say is that our community will continue to offer their support and prayers and best wishes ongoing Mr Northe said Mr Northe said the 9th February was also the 1st anniversary of the Morwell mine fire which caused significant distress amongst our local community and in particular Morwell residents I wish to again commend our emergency service personnel for their extraordinary dedication and courage during the period of the mine fire event Mr Northe said In addition one can only admire the resilience of our community and the efforts of community leaders in times of adversity Whether it is in Boolarra Yinnar Traralgon South Jeeralang Morwell or other towns who have endured traumatic events our local leaders have really shone through when needed Media contact Russell Northe 5133 9088 Share this post Facebook Twitter Google LinkedIn Related posts Northe stands up

    people the chance to get involved providing them with a positive sense of self worth Mr Northe said Regular physical activity not only protects against many illnesses it also makes us mentally healthy alert and resilient against the stresses of modern life The following clubs were among a total of 270 across Victoria to share in more than 650 000 worth of VicHealth Active Club Grants 1st Morwell Scout Group 2 834 19 Falcons 2000 Soccer Club 3 000 Gippsland Gladiators Gridiron 3 000 Churchill Football Netball Club 2 938 18 Gormandale Cricket Club 2 972 95 Traralgon Hockey Club 3 000 Traralgon Olympians Soccer Club 1 600 Tyers Soccer Club 3 000 VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said it was good to continue to support local sporting organisations VicHealth is committed to tackling the tough issues in particular the rising obesity levels in Victoria To help combat this we want to make physical activity participation part of everyday living active recreation and organised sport Our Active Clubs Grants in particular aim to make it a little easier for clubs to buy items or equipment to encourage people in the local community to join their club and help them improve safety for those taking part she said Sports and active recreation clubs in the Morwell electorate are a great way for locals to get involved meet new people and keep active for good health We know from previous rounds these grants encourage community members to try a new activity support them to join their local club or continue playing their favourite sport she said To create greater opportunities for clubs to access Active Club Grants VicHealth is running two rounds of funding the second of which is closes on Friday 13 February 2015 For more information about VicHealth s Active Clubs
