  • Latrobe Valley workers abandoned by Andrews Labor Government – Russell Northe
had been contacted by many local businesses and job seekers who were interested in working on projects such as the Latrobe Regional Hospital redevelopment the Morwell Primary School regeneration project and the Esso pipeline replacement project which was contracted to Nacap Australia We had the Energy and Resources Minister Lily D Ambrosio in Rosedale the other week during the start of construction on the Esso pipeline saying how it was great news for local jobs but it appears the practicality is far different Mr Northe said Local highly qualified personnel have put to me that they found it extremely difficult to obtain information to participate in any of these projects and when they do source the information workers are simply being told it is too late We must find a better solution that informs our community of future major projects that will provide an opportunity for locals to participate in I ve been advised that many contractors are being brought in from other parts of the state and from other states and this is an enormous source of frustration from locals Mr Northe said whilst I appreciate there does need to be external contractors engaged for some speciality works in our region more needs to be done to ensure locals at least have a chance to compete for work where we have the appropriate skill sets Employment opportunities in the Latrobe Valley had been impacted following the Labor Government s decision to axe the 15 million Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund Mr Northe said We remember before the election the Premier promising 100 000 new full time jobs would be created in the first two years and we know this has not been the case as latest job statistics show nearly 3 600 full time jobs in our region

  • State Government must provide local jobs fund – Russell Northe
5 million will be redirected into the Latrobe Valley for other economic development programs Mr Northe said the Andrews Government had axed the Coalition s successful 15 million Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund LVIIF leaving the business community without a specific avenue to secure economic development funding Therefore the redirecting of this funding into our community is critically important to boost business confidence in the region he said Mr Northe said if the Shanghai Electric project was no longer proceeding then that money should be redirected to re establish a program such as LVIIF LVIIF was aimed at boosting employment industry and infrastructure in the Latrobe Valley and it supported more than 40 businesses and leveraged close to 100 million in investment creating 1200 jobs in our community With unemployment levels on the rise now is the time for the Andrews Government to do something to create jobs in the Morwell electorate Mr Northe said Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released last week shows that 3 600 full time jobs have been lost in Latrobe Gippsland since the Andrews Government came to office Mr Northe said the unemployment rate in Latrobe has risen from 6 1 per cent in December 2014 to 8 2 per cent in January 2016 Daniel Andrews came to office promising to create 100 000 full time jobs in two years but more than a year on and 3 577 full time jobs have been lost in the Latrobe Gippsland region Mr Northe said Jobs in the Latrobe Gippsland region have gone backwards since Daniel Andrews became Premier He has been all talk and no action It appears Daniel Andrews and his colleagues are too busy fighting amongst themselves rather than focusing on creating jobs in regional Victoria Media contact 5133 9088 Share this post

  • Nationals continue fight for Public Indoor Heated Pool – Russell Northe
proposal for a 30 million public indoor heated pool The Andrews Labor Government has still not pledged any funding or support for upgrading Traralgon s pool and it s extremely disappointing to see a worthy local project over looked Mr Northe said Traralgon s population is around 28 000 people and is the only town in all of regional Victoria that does not have a public heated indoor pool with a population of that size Member for Eastern Victoria Region Melina Bath said the current 50 metre outdoor pool was opened over half a century ago and was outdated and underused I know that other parts of regional Victoria have some fantastic indoor aquatic centres which are used all year round for teaching kids to swim rehabilitation fitness and competition as well as many other activities Ms Bath said This is still an issue that is very much in the public eye here and it s disappointing the Andrews Labor Government is yet to see the importance of this facility to Traralgon and the wider community It s great to have the Shadow Minister here to keep him up to date and Russell and I will continue to listen to our constituents and fight for state government funds for the Traralgon pool redevelopment Community member Janette Brady said my belief is that local councils should provide and maintain community facilities that they own for their region This land is already owned by the council which would certainly save in costs should it remain in its current location Mrs Brady said Given that we are a population of 28 000 residents and have no large water body for use all year round we are in dire need of an accessible public indoor heated pool There seems to be strong community support
