  • Greg s speech itself a work of art the work as he says of my book not only of a wordsmith I admire but of a mature person someone who s lived and decided to live on here on my website For now though I m going to quote a few passages to give you an idea why Greg thinks Fire Diary and me so uncool and why he thinks that kind of uncoolness so well cool and necessary Mark s belief in the sanctity of nature which is everywhere implied in these poems this almost boyish heartfeltness integrated with the grownup accomplishment of his poetic craft is quite special With these talents converging Mark becomes a singer motivated by and loyal to the impulse of beauty in the world A quality I d like to emphasize about Fire Diary beyond its pretty uncool delivery of wisdom into the ironic heart of contemporary poetry is how well Mark knows the world of which he speaks Greg speaks of the difficulty faced by any artist confronted by what I have called the autism of nature its profound self possession and yet who wants to witness nature to speak out of gratitude and in the hope of saying something worthwhile about doing something useful for the much put upon earth He thinks I manage to render the world I love and yet leave it intact through an exactness about the phenomenological experience of the emotionally struck human figure in the massive midst of stars birds storms dawns trees both European and Indigenous and rivers both fucked up and restored But what Greg concludes Fire Diary has above all what I admire so much is its personal vulnerability For me it s a capacity simultaneous with his geomorphological understanding astute metrics and attention

  • lives in Burradoo which is in the Wingecarribee Shire near Bowral There s a wonderful sweep in his work you get weather you often get time of day you get season you get river you get trees you get snakes spiders foxes horses cows birds and hens you get children you get the moon at night and the daylight moon you get sun and sunshine you get stars you get the varying colours and slant of light you get lots of rain you get smoke and mist and you get more rain you get brilliant metaphors and perhaps most brilliantly of all you get mood I really can t think of any other poet who gives us quite so many subtle modulations dispositions and humours in each single poem as Mark does the mood can change from delight to melancholy to wit all within a few lines And here s an example from Wingecarribee Eclogues 1 My daughter not yet one crawls to my chair and takes my pens and tries to steal the book I try to write in This could be a metaphor but who knows My son fresh from the bath and naked yet steps into my boots This could be another but I hope not I sit in the corner of the thick of my life and I think I ll keep on writing till I run out of pens One minute he s rather phlegmatic the next expectant and hopeful as in these opening lines from Paradise Once I lay in the lassitude of summer rocking the sky s slow boat looking up the skirts of a sorority of poplars The wind rose and the grey leaves panicked in a silver school and swam south But not far south and the sky above was a lapis scrim of unbroken thought The American poet James Wright coined the phrase the genius of place by which I think he meant the spirit the power the prevailing mood or dominant individuality even oddness that a place can be beset with Mark is so good at capturing the temper of a place and seamlessly yoking it to the world of troubles of human hope and disappointment of doubt love and desire It s clear that Mark s power as a poet comes out of his ability to capture an extraordinary number of extras or windfalls because he is so aware of what is going on in his language the metaphors he creates are stylish funny inventive sure footed and they carry enormous intensity of feeling There is in Mark s work a superb handling of utterance and this comes through mainly in his use of a long sinuous flowing line I am so glad to see that the Publisher has kept integrity with this long line by making this book wider than most normal poetry books in order not to break up the lines but present them in their fullness Most publishers wouldn t do this The rhythms are

  • who want to find out how good syntax makes for good sentences how a writing life depends finally on technique and how that depends on getting deep into the inner life of sentences My book is more than a repair manual for out of tune sentences it s much more than an elementary primer it s much less than an encyclopedia It s an exploration of and exaltation in the messy and beautiful deep structure of langauge And it s a grammar by a writer for the writer in everyone 2 With the advent of internet forums chat rooms and text messaging making grammatical sense seems to have become secondary to geting the message out quick How does grammar matter in the twenty first century No one can avoid grammar Even if you can t tell a pronoun from a participle at ten paces you re still an amateur grammarian you employ it at quite a sophisticated level every time you speak or text or make a half decent sentence even a sentence fragment You need grammar if you want to make sense no matter how fast you want to make it You can use some sms code some emotikons and a few abbreviations if you like but you can t do without grammar grammar is the system by which we make meaning out those otherwise autistic blobs of sound and suggestion that we call words You can t make a whole lot of sense until you write a sentence and grammar is how you make a sentence The more elegantly or rapidly or beautifully or memorably you want to make sense in a text message or a newspaper column or a speech or a love letter or a novel or a poem the more syntax you re going to need that is the better you might need to know your way around the fourteen pieces of punctuation the more classic gaffes you might want to be sure to avoid the more varieties of legitimate sentence you might want to compose Knowing some grammar helps you send cooller briefer more potent and winning messages Grammar indeed is the new black Or perhaps the new green It s how writers take that bit of extra care it s how they learn to be better writers and stay that way In the end it helps you write that message not only better but faster too 3 How would you rate Australia s grammar Here s a strange thing Two of the most widely read and respected authorities on English grammar are Australians Rodney Huddleston The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language and Pam Peters The Cambridge Australian English Style Guide at the same time one encounters more basic grammar glitches in Australian academic papers policy documents newspapers novels annual reports and political speeches than in writing of the same kind in other comparable jurisdictions the US the UK or Canada I listened the other day to a wonderfully intelligent and passionate scholar
