    business is registered The national system will see the Australian Securities and Investments Commission ASIC manage the registration of business names for the whole country Current State and Territory services will cease to operate and the registered business names information held by agencies like Consumer Protection including expiry dates will automatically transfer across to the new national system From late May business name renewal forms will come from ASIC If you have a business name due to be renewed between 28 May and July 2012 you may receive the form later than usual Don t panic your business name will not be deregistered and you will get extended time for renewal to make sure you re not disadvantaged by the launch of the national register The idea behind a single national system is to reduce red tape save time and cut costs for business It means businesses will no longer have to register their business names in every State and Territory in which they want to trade Being on the one ASIC run register allows businesses to forget about our borders and operate inter state Business name holders with duplicate names registered in multiple jurisdictions should choose to keep one and let the rest expire or speed up the process by cancelling the names no longer required In the event of identical names held by different businesses in different States all the names will transfer to the new register and they will be identified by their State or Territory for example XYZ bakery Western Australia and XYZ Bakery Tasmania Going forward duplication of names will be avoided because there is a single Australian register A key benefit is the online focus of the new system Businesses will be able to register and renew their national business names via the dedicated
