    Mine the largest diamond mine in the world is also located some 120 kilometres by road from Kununurra a shorter distance by air Other products mined in the East Kimberley include gold lead zinc and with the prospect of platinum nickel and copper in the near future Large deposits of bauxite also exist in the area Offshore reserves of oil and gas also have substantial potential and plans are currently underway to commence mining these off the Kimberley coast Agricultural products of the Ord River Irrigation Area ORIA include sugar cane melons and a range of cucurbit crops dry culinary beans and chick peas mangoes bananas hybrid seed for Eastern States markets cattle fattened on leucaena and a range of emerging tree crops such as lemon lime red grapefruit carambola star apple sapodilla as well as large areas under sandalwood The melons and other cucurbit crops are grown to take advantage of our mild to warm winter when these crops can be grown out of season to other production areas thus allowing Australians to enjoy a wider range of fresh fruit and vegetables year round They are transported by road train to Brisbane Sydney Melbourne Adelaide and Perth Markets The Ord River District Co operative The Co op is the focal point of most farming in the ORIA This farmer owned and controlled business provides farmers with seeds chemicals fertilisers and cardboard cartons It cleans and grades beans and chickpeas ready for sale and stores and handles other grain crops ready for sale The Co op manages the Wyndham Port owns and operates an Ag Aeroplane for spraying crops owns and operates the sugar and molasses storage facilities at Wyndham The Co op has been given the rights by the State Government to develop 1500Ha of undeveloped land for sugar

    Parker President Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley Jeff Gooding CEO Kimberley Development Commission who spoke about the Northern Development Kimberley Blueprint Strategic Plan etc Jill Williams our Chamber President also spoke on the evening and Michele Pucci Board Member Gelganyem Limited chaired the evening Every person was given the opportunity at their table to answer 2 specific questions on the night and they had 15 minutes on each question and those questions were What are the ideas for the future What are the challenges we may come across Each person s individual Ideas Challenges were written onto large pieces of butchers paper at their table and after 15 minutes on each question they were then asked to work together as a group and come up with a choice of the Top 2 Priority ideas Top 2 priority Challenges at that table and they were highlighted with bright pink stickers Each piece of butchers paper from all 11 tables were then displayed at the front of the hall for everyone to see So for example from 11 tables 9 tables suggested Foreshore Development Lily Lagoon Water Park Board walks as an idea but only 3 tables chose it as a priority Across all 11 tables some of the ideas did come up regularly and you will find them displayed in the charts Some of the Ideas have been merged together as they were either worded differently from other tables or fell under the same umbrella if you like Each number on the chart reflects the amount of table suggestions Please find attached a number of charts that show the outcomes from our Public Forum Click on the orange links Chart 1 of 3 What are the ideas for the future Chart 1 of 3 What are the ideas for the future
