  • Dear Western Sydney you're not alone | James Purser
about it apart from the fact that it seems to have become THE region upon which all election campaigns are based With that in mind I thought I would educate myself on the region by reading the blogue posts of a couple of Western Sydney natives prestontowers and bluntshovels Both of them are long time residents of the region and are informative and entertaining writers The first post by bluntshovels covers the topic of employment in Western Sydney while prestontowers first post tackles the myth that Western Sydney is a sea of McMansions I would recommend that you go and read both of them and subsequent posts especially if you re watching the circus that is the political caravaning across Western Sydney at the moment One thing did strike me about both of the posts I mentioned above With very little effort you could quite easily turn both posts into treatise on employment and housing in my own region the Illawarra We suffer many of the same problems though with a smaller population The unemployment rate in the Illawarra has historically been one of the highest in the state especially youth unemployment and with the major employer in the region slowly dying yes I said it In 20 years time I doubt Bluescope is still going to be operating it s only getting worse Population growth is outstripping infrastructure development and politically we ve either been ignored or treated as a prize in internal labor factional fighting The Illawarra is a region that reaches from the southern outskirts of the Sutherland shire the southern most part of Greater Sydney down to the Kiama municipality It s a strip of land between looming escarpment and the pacific ocean that still manages to house over two hundred and eighty thousand people Over

  • How does this marketing thing work? | James Purser
By nature I m not someone who does the self marketing thing well I tend to shy away from anything that I think might be big noting myself too much this applies both in my private life as well as professionaly One of the reasons I decided to start podcasting in the first place was that it allowed me to combine a passion of mine multimedia content creation with something that would help me deal with one of my failings dealing with people I don t know So for me this marketing lark could be seen as the next step in learning how to do things with people So with that in mind I ve decided to set myself a couple of marketing goals Downloads per episode I would love to increase the number of people who listen to Angry Beanie content Currently For Science is averaging around 200 250 downloads per episode I m only counting those downloads in the fortnight following the release of the ep while Purser Explores The World is getting between 170 and 220 These aren t bad numbers but I would like to see more So I m going to set myself the goal

  • The derp is already knee deep | James Purser
period when writs are issued and the election itself During that time the government is not allowed to make new policy and essentially the idea is to just keep things running as they were on the day the writs were issued So the Coalition in effect demanded that the Government just put the handbrake on and idle for the next eight months stop passing laws stop making policy and just generally stop Right The two stand out examples of this sort of derp for me were Malcolm Turnbulls demand that the NBN Co stop entering into any new contracts until the election and Greg Hunt demanding that the Climate Change Fund not hand out any funds when it starts operating in July Stop the boats derp We all know how fond the Coalition is of the Stop the boats campaign It reaches to that mean little nugget of bile that drives a certain demographic Well they managed to reach a new low high depending on your point of view I guess this week when they declared that they would have the Navy forcibly turn back boats from Sri Lanka before they hit Australian territorial waters I don t know if this moves into the territory of state sanctioned piracy or not but at the very least it seems to be a complete abrogation of our treaty obligations They also claimed people are leaving Sri Lanka in crappy boats to travel thousands of miles across the ocean purely for economic reasons This despite the mass of evidence that suggests that Sri Lanka is less than the harmonious and healing nation that it might be portrayed by the Sri Lankan government Northern Australia derp Of course the latest in the constant rain of derp is the leaked Coalition discussion paper for developing

  • Holy carp! Australia is socialist! | James Purser
some guy in a tin foil hat Keep drinking the kool aid reply Australia s socialism Permalink Submitted by Murfomurf on Sun 31 07 2011 18 14 The health system that the whole world envies Australia s Medicare is deliberately socialist in aim but has been corrupted by gap payments greedy doctors organisations and publicly subsidised private insurance for the rich which doesn t get them one iota of better health care though might provide softer sheets It s the same as Britain s NHS only better as the Brits are traditionally more scared of reds under the bed Australia could never be a classic communist state who d want to own everything jointly then pay the lawyers the same as the road workers Thank goodness the Liberals here are not like the US Republicans we d have no Medicare at all then and probably no dole Australians couldn t be so foolish I hope reply Australia is Socialist Permalink Submitted by Trish Hunt on Sat 26 11 2011 17 06 The NHS has dived to the bottom being soviet union like in health care It s about quantity not quality What makes a true democracy great Art Freedom of expression Differences of opinion The same applies to services Those gap payments don t apply to all doctors if you want bulk billing free quick care quantity then you have it If you want a more premium service then you have it We re all individuals and a one size fits all approach doesn t recognise that i prefer the Australia system Also if you are on social benefits you won t get charged the gap fee I know as I have had a health care card in the past The gap payments are for those with money which further subsidises the treatment of the poor i e it s all about income redistribution So stop complaining about those gap payments it helps address social inequity And yes I agree with the author that Australia is a socialist country The income tax system is geared around income redistribution Get used to it It s a good system reply socialism is a bad system and australia is too socialist Permalink Submitted by mattc on Mon 13 02 2012 01 55 The problem with socialism in Australia is that guys like me who pay insane amounts of tax and have to put up with the union loving over priced arrogant Aussie worker Is that at some point you get sick of it and Medicare and filthy wealth redistribution so you pick and leave taking jobs and opportunity with you This leave only the weak and lazy behind I would love to see how Australia fares in 20 years when china owns everything See how the more extreme form of socialism suits you reply Here here I recommend Permalink Submitted by Jack on Sat 28 07 2012 22 42 Here here I recommend Singapore maximum tax rate of 20 and most importantly NO

  • It's not a TV anymore it's a Screen | James Purser
s a big box panel that feeds us what the free to air or cable broadcasters send across the air or down the cable You have to work your schedule around the broadcasters However the future of TV isn t as the big box in the middle of the lounge room Rather it s as just another service amongst many utilised by a variety of different devices This means that your Television is going to be replaced by a screen both physically and mentally In our house it s already happened We have two tablets xoom and ipad1 an ipod touch a nexus s and a big screen hooked up to a logitech revue which in turn is hooked up to our home entertainment server mythtv box What this means is that it s just as easy for the kids to watch something on youtube as it is for them to watch television We can rent movies from Google Play and watch them in SD or HD on either the Xoom Revue or Nexus S If we want we can listen to radio streams from around the world or access the Pandora music service We maybe something out of the
