  • Who Cares About Petrol Prices? Umm Everyone Should | James Purser
reply simplistic reductionism just doesn t cut it Permalink Submitted by craig on Sat 31 05 2008 22 58 1 it wasn t 5 tank it was 5 per 100 litres which is roughly 2 tanks 2 my point was that all the whinging and bleating about a few cents per litre the political grand standing about which party cares most about the impact on the working family is giving me the shits that was actually the point of my post the title should have been a clue 3 yes our economy IS oil based and water is wet in the future that s going to have to be WAS otherwise we wont have an economy at all because we re way past peak oil and well into the down slope if we don t diversify our economy our civilisation WILL collapse and nothing like it will ever come back because there wont be the cheap energy needed to bootstrap any distant future civilisation and most likely there wont be any people to even attempt to rebuild civilisation our current one isn t going to go quietly it s going to end violently and catastrophically squabbling and fighting wars probably inevitably nuclear wars over the dwindling energy resources the iraq war is the first stage of that I don t know about you but I m not exactly looking forward to that This isn t something that we have a choice about it s shit that s going to happen whether we like it or not the sooner we as a society realise that the sooner we can start getting ourselves out of the monumental pile of shit that we re heading for that continual incremental increase you talk about is irreversible and inevitable and will rapidly accelerate as oil gets even scarcer pushed even faster by the speculators jumping in to get rich while they can get used to it it s only going to get worse MUCH WORSE from here our only way out is to invest now in alternative energy WHILE we ve still got the cheap energy that will be needed to develop the required technology if we leave it too late then it really will be too late and the collapse will be inevitable if anyone needs to pull their heads out of their arses it s people who think that what s coming is as trivial as more expensive fuel or groceries or that such trivialities are in any way important btw the major reason why the cost of living has increased so much in recent years has NOTHING to do with the price of oil it s due to the insane housing fad we ve had for the last decade with people paying and eager to pay absurd prices for environmentally disastrous monstrosities in shithole outer suburbs with no services or public transport eager and egged on and encouraged by the vultures in the housing and mortgage industries now they re stuck with

  • Understand the Whinging, Now Lets Do Something | James Purser
Thorne For those who don t have the time it covers a group of high school students in a disadvantaged area of Chicago who do something different for their science project They grow their own fuel from algae It took them about a year but they managed to grow enough fuel to drive a VW Combi van from their school to the Seers tower and back A trip roughly about 21 kilometres long Seriously if these kids can do it as a part time project what s stopping the rest of the world adopting the same sort of technology Algae based fuel generation has a couple of benefits firstly it s not using food that is desperately needed elsewhere to drive your car and secondly its a renewable resource It just keeps on growing and growing Secondly for those seeking for ways to reduce the impact that our current crop of power stations are having on the environment algae systems can be used to scrub the emmissions and turn them into both bio diesel and ethanol Now this is not to say we should keep the coal fired stations around any longer than necessary but while we re stuck with
