  • A bit of an update | James Purser
me to meet interesting people and ask them questions about a wide range of different subjects I m currently gathering material for the first episode which is going to have a focus on the Australian Space community This new project is going to be hosted at a new website called angrybeanie com it s up but pretty empty at the moment If things go well it should be the first of a number of projects I have in mind On a related note I ve installed XBMC on my Myth Box mainly so we can have something that will allow us to use the internet on the lounge room tv It appears to have a bit more polish than Boxee and looks very nice on the big screen I m yet to get my hands on a GoogleTV device but I m beginning to question exactly what the hell is going on with Google TV that s a post for another day I think Let s see what else On a local note we re only a few weeks away from the Wollongong Local Government elections and to be honest I m not super inspired by the range of candidates both for mayor or councillor Wollongong is getting to the pointy end of a number of challenges and I m yet to hear anyone with a concrete plan Just in case you re wondering I did consider standing but now is not a good time I have a business I need to grow and a family that needs me more Oh yes continuing the local theme Bluescope Steel after complaining about the affect of the Carbon tax which hasn t actually been brought in and even then they are getting millions more than they will ever be expected to pay

  • This is not the tech news | James Purser
paid by men around the world who have a feeder fetish that is they get excited by watching a woman eat huge amounts of food to put on weight Her connection to technology She has a website The second story concerns Lady Gaga and the fact that her account on youtube has been suspended for copyright violations Again the technology is secondary to the actual story The third story actually concerns something where technology is at the fore Apple is finally doing something about the pricing structure that has seen Australians pay more for apps and music than USAnians despite the fact that the AUD is stronger than the USD The big picture on the bottom left is also another actual tech story yay 2 so far This one concerns a non invasive system to assist some legally blind people It consists of a pair of glasses that have leds embedded in them and two cameras The cameras feed directly into a processor which then light up the leds to warn the user of impending obstacles While it won t work for all blind people it s still pretty cool Then we leave the actual tech news to get back to gossip not one but two articles about how Malcolm Turnbull using twitter One to defend himself over comments he made about Tony Abbott and the other to release the phone number of someone who had been harrassing him through abusive sms These aren t tech stories twitter is not the focus here it s just the medium a medium that millions of people use every day without it being newsworthy So out of the six top stories in the Editors Picks of the SMH tech section four are people stories where tech is incidental to the actual story My

  • The Internet. It's not special anymore | James Purser
now It s nothing new So why the hell is the media still treating It happened on the internet 11 as something special Here s a recent example watch out for the autoplay video from the Sydney Morning Herald A mystery reveller who enjoyed one too many drinks at one of London s poshest hotels found himself kicked out on the street and into internet stardom On his trip home the middle aged man somersaults down stairs totters into road barriers rolls around on the road and falls into gutters each time dusting off his suit pants and launching himself into another energetic mishap The story is right there Guy gets drunk stumbles amusingly home This is listed in the Technology Section of the Sydney Morning Herald Do you know why Because someone uploaded the CCTV footage of his Mr Magoo like journey onto Youtube That s it Let s be honest here if youtube wasn t involved the story itself would probably have never made it to print although I believe it could have been an award winner in Australias Funniest Home Videos Here s another example again from the Sydney Morning Herald This time the story is covering the scandal surrounding Congressman Weiner in the US This is not a technology story This is a person story in which technology was incidental to the monumental stupidity of one man Seriously people technology is no longer whizz bang It s now part of our lives to the point where the simple use of it should NOT be the guiding factor in a news story Given that there are plenty of stories out there about innovative new technologies this sort of thing just makes the media look slow and out of touch Blog Catagories media technology journalism James Purser s

  • The Clowncar School of Politics | James Purser
like a diseased donkey carcass Or its opposition members lobbing questions like the following Why won t the Prime Minister admit that she hates children eats small puppies for breakfast and hasn t worn a clean pair of knickers in years Oh and she s barren by choice the anti family witch Then when the PM doesn t give the answer the questioner wants which appears to be Of course how silly of me I m going to go quit get married and have kids right now the opposition launches a series of Point Of Order s or POOs or behaves like they never actually left year 9 Then we have the daily censure motions Pretty much every freaking day Tony Abbott stands up in during Question Time and moves that Standing Orders be suspended so that he can move a censure motion against the Government Of course when this happens Question Time is essentially over for the day and we get half an hour of ranting and posturing that ends with the same result the motion is defeated and everyones time is wasted Quite what the hell Abbott thinks he s achieiving is beyond me 99 of people don t give a flying crap about what happens in Question Time and the 1 of people who do have started running a book on twitter as to the time the motion to suspend will be called Joe Hockey Shadow Treasurer and Twitter Clown So today was the anniversay of the Spillard Those fateful hours in which the faceless men of the Labor party decided that because the polls were down they weren t down enough so hey lets ditch our leader Rudd was elbowed out and Gillard stepped up to the plate to take control and bring the government back

  • Why would you run for Council? | James Purser
organised community consultations to being stopped in the street and asked questions Attend community events This isn t just a political thing Community events are a great way to speak to people who will otherwise not be engaged in the Local scene Be a leader in community debates Don t just be a follower of the local media special interest group etc etc You had a passion for something that drove you to get elected use it Be prepared to live a semi public life If you re going to represent the community then the community is going to want to know about you Don t be corrupt No seriously You d think in 2011 that I wouldn t have to say that but there you have it The thing to remember after all of that is that the position of a Councillor is essentially a part time job with full time commitments You maybe spending long hours in Council meetings community engagements community consultations and so on but you still have to juggle that with Real Life Councillor Remuneration So for all that what exactly do potential Councillors have to look forward with regards to compensation Actually bugger all in the grand schemee of things How much Councillors are paid actually depends on how the Council they are part of is categorised For instance if you re a Councillor from Port Stephens a Regional Rural Council you ll get between 7 550 00 and 16 640 00 a year however if you re a Sydney City Councillor the only Principal City Council you will get between 22 680 00 and 33 270 00 a year The role of mayor brings a second payment on top of the first this payment too is graded depending on the type of Council
