  • Angry Beanie Broadcasting Studio Mark 1 | James Purser
live discussion surrounding current topics issues and people For this I m going to need something a bit different Essentially I need to build a studio kitout that does the following Streams audio to an external streamer Allows me to mix live and pre recorded content Allows me to include external people via skype skype conferences for the win Now I ve got almost all of the above in a single package via a piece of software called Internet DJ Console A jackd based package I can t recommend it enough for anyone looking to do streaming from a Linux based system The UI is easy to understand and use and it should take only a few minutes to get setup with it However there is one area that I have never been able to get to work and that s the integration of Skype and Jack Which has led me to the studio design I have now The Angry Beanie Broadcast Studio Mark 1 features the following Primary Streaming Laptop This is the laptop that I use to run IDJC it accepts audio from the mixer as well as pre recorded content Runs Ubuntu IDJC Audacity Skype Laptop This is an older laptop whos only task is to run Skype The audio from this laptop is fed into the mixer and it also accepts audio back Runs Ubuntu Skype Primary Microphone This is the microphone I use to speak to listeners and those who I am interacting with via the Skype laptop Mixer Board This is a JB Systems Pro Series Beat Four which was gifted to me by one of my wifes friends It s a 4 channel mixer with a mic input like this but older I ve added some photos below to help show how things

  • Angry Beanie Radio, now almost like a real radio station | James Purser
recorded content switching between two different streams Well I ve built a platform that allows me to do just that Icecast Icecast is probably one of the oldest and most used FOSS streaming packages Able to stream in both mp3 and ogg It s easy to setup and uses a simple XML file configuration Takes audio from any source that can talk the shoutcast protocol This is sitting on my Linode at audio angrybeanie com AirTime is a GPL 3 licensed radio automation package that allows you to do most of the things that any traditional radio station can AirTime allows me to do a number of things Create and maintain playlists Stream those playlists to the Icecast server Schedule broadcast blocks which can be used with either playlists or Live content from other clients Create and manage users This turns Angry Beanie Radio from a one man hobby into something more Now I can give people access to create playlists and build their own shows As you can see it s a pretty comprehensive setup and if you re running on a reasonably modern Ubuntu then setup is actually pretty easy However if you want to put it on another non debian based distro then I wouldn t I tried getting it setup on the Linode which is running CentOS but it was simply easier to install it on an Ubuntu VM I have on my home machine IDJC I spoke about IDJC in the last post this is what gives me the ability to take the audio from the Angry Beanie Studio and send it to the icecast server It s not seemless the way that live and pre recorded content is mixed actually relies on the Icecast stream fall back mechanism The idea is that you setup
