    Chief Executive Officer at its Hazelwood power generation business in Victoria Mr Luc Dietvorst has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of IPR GDF SUEZ Hazelwood replacing Mr Graeme York who has been appointed to a new role as a Director of Operations in the newly combined IPR GDF SUEZ business in London Mr Dietvorst was previously the Chief Operating Officer with GDF Suez in Qatar Middle East and he will replace Mr York who led the Hazelwood business for the past five and half years Mr Dietvorst comes to Australia with over 30 years of international experience in power generation businesses He moved to the Middle East around 10 years ago and has been working in various positions in the GDF SUEZ owned assets in the region Announcing the appointments IPR GDF SUEZ Australia s Chief Executive Officer Mr Tony Concannon said Mr Dietvorst had the knowledge experience and expertise required to continue to take the Hazelwood business forward during the important years ahead where future carbon policy could profoundly affect the Latrobe Valley industry Luc knows there are very significant challenges facing our coal fired assets in this country and he is very focused and determined to achieve

    record 30 Jun 2011 International Power GDF SUEZ Hazelwood is back to full generation output with the return to service of its Unit 5 generator at the Hazelwood power station The 220 MW unit has undergone a comprehensive repair and maintenance outage over the past six months following an incident in late December 2010 which seriously damaged the generator Hazelwood s Chief Executive Officer Luc Dietvorst said the return to service of Unit 5 is a major achievement for the Latrobe Valley based business its employees and contractors The work on Unit 5 included repairs to the generator stator an overhaul of the generator rotor and the installation of our spare generator transformer Mr Dietvorst said This was an excellent planning and scheduling achievement by Hazelwood employees our alliance partners and contractors to bring forward and align the major outage to other critical works required for the effective return of Unit 5 Mr Dietvorst said while the cost of the outage was tens of millions of dollars it was very much an investment that will help ensure Hazelwood continues to make a significant contribution to the national electricity market This return to service of Unit 5 has delivered a significant

    the Commonwealth Government s proposed carbon tax legislation announced today Chief Executive Mr Tony Concannon said the Government has offered some relief from the proposed new tax package announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard but this fell short of what was required to avoid financial distress in the generation sector We obviously haven t had an opportunity to properly review the detail of what is a complex new tax Mr Concannon said However what is clear is that a number of important aspects have not been addressed Coal fired power stations produce over 83 per cent of the National Electricity Market electricity and this has underpinned the Australian economy for many decades and continues to do so today particularly in Victoria Wholesale electricity prices remain at a level which is less than half the prices in Europe It s important to understand that lower emission technologies are much more expensive than fossil fuel generation Mr Concannon said Thousands of people especially in the Latrobe Valley work very professionally to produce a product electricity which modern society demands on a 24 7 basis The new policy as set out will be very disturbing news for the people who work in and support the brown coal fired generating industry in Victoria The government s announcement makes it clear it is looking for early closure of a large brown coal fired power station in the Latrobe Valley and we understand that Hazelwood will be the subject of continuing speculation We want to work with the government to remove the uncertainty as soon as possible Mr Concannon said IPR is a world leader in low emission energy and has had a portfolio of power plant in Australia for over 15 years but a change in law such as the proposed carbon tax needs to
