  • Course Report August & September | Hartfield Golf Club
bins sand tubs posts etc In partnership with the shire of Kalamunda and Hartfield Country Club we are currently having our native bush mapped and treated thru injections and foliar spray to minimise this effects of Die back Phytophthora cinnamomi which targets a lot of our native trees throughout the course especially the Jarrahs trees Banksias and Sheoaks syringe injection of trees is being done through the Glenn Tufnell and his staff from Dieback Treatment Association of Western Australia and Hartfield was last treated and mapped back in 2010 Continued with verti draining areas around the course this is to help the playing surfaces out by relieving soil compaction to the wet areas around greens and allowing excess water to pass through the soil profile Having to change tines depending on the areas we are working on Greens have just been mini tined and are due for a light sand application dusting to improve firmness drainage and roll of the greens We didn t turf out the collar on the 9 th green to remove couch encroachment favourable conditions for bent grass growth made it hard to identify all of the couch and if we had have turfed out the couch with the young bent grass it most likely would have sat dormant and putting surface would have suffered Works planned for the months of August September Preparation for the Hartfield Open and the lead up to the event normal maintenance practices of fertiliser applications but without the pacloburtazol Growth retardant Bunker maintenance edging fly mow weeding and levelling Greens renovations will start on Sunday evening after the Hartfield Open to give us a head start to the week Course fertiliser applications for spring green up Pre emergent applications of herbicide to our tees to control the crab grass also

  • Course Director’s Report | Hartfield Golf Club
of doing it in house The cost worked out the same however the time frame using contractors was reduced from two weeks down to less than two days This allowed the staff to keep the course maintenance up while also enabling them to complete other jobs such as the mounding down the left hand side of the eleventh Over the next couple of weeks golfers will notice a dark product on the thirteenth fairway and some small dark twigs It is a compost product that we are trialling to try and improve the surface on the fairway which struggles with the competition from the tree roots These trees are Eucalyptus camaldulensi a common name river gum and they have a liking for well drained or seasonally waterlogged soil These trees would have been ideal in the early days of Hartfield when the back nine was often water logged and drains and trees were installed to manage the surface water Now the climate has dried the problem is that the trees and their surface roots spread to the fairways or any watered areas in search of moisture The compost will hopefully hold moisture and nutrients supplying enough for both the trees and the fairway Compost also increases the microbial population in the soil breaking down some of the organic matter that is already there to further promote growth in the patches that are struggling After the application of the compost it will be watered in under the normal irrigation program and brushed into the core holes Unfortunately there will be as mentioned some small twigs and sticks visible on the surface of the grass Once the Superintendent is happy with the amount of compost that has been washed into the profile the remaining sticks will be blown off the fairway Over
