of this magical time is the majors the Caulfield Cup Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup Two and a half weeks of great races Each race for varying reasons can be a grand final in its own right I say grand final as for any number of reasons a horse may only be set for one race and even if it wins may not run in another of the majors Traditionally the staying handicappers ran in both Cups But that is not a given these days Some horses now bypass the Caulfield cup altogether for fear of attracting a significant penalty and making it that much harder to win the Melbourne Cup Some like last year s Caulfield winner Southern Speed were not entered for the later Cup altogether The Cox Plate traditionally requires a WFA quality horse fast and strong over ten furlongs It is a race for the perennial champion who can return year after year but would perhaps carry too much weight in handicaps The Melbourne Cup a handicap and run at two miles is certainly distinct from any other race but is also often too testing in distance and or weight for many a Cox Plate winner So it can be argued each is a grand final in its own right The Melbourne Cup is undoubtedly our greatest race But what about a fourth major What about a true grand final that potentially could bring together the winners and placegetters of the other major races plus perhaps the top performers from theDerbyand Oaks To suit all these participants such a race would need to be WFA and run at the classic distance In many respects such a race already exists the Sandown Zipping Classic What the Sandown Zipping Classic currently lacks is the prize money and promotion to make it a fourth major It already has many advantages being at the end of the carnival run at 2400m and at WFA Being run at Sandown also gives it unique status comparable to the other majors all run at separate tracks To be successful this Champion Classic would need to be worth at least 2 million Increased sponsorship and a whole of industry approach would be needed to achieve such a pool Perhaps an increase in the nomination fees to the other races mentioned could occur creating a pool to increase the prize money for the fourth major In this scenario once nominated in one of the other races a horse is nominated for the Champion Classic This would also attract interest in pre post betting for the race In recent years some of the international Melbourne Cup contenders have stayed for the Sandown Zipping Classic under current conditions Many from the Cox Plate Derby Oaks don t have another start But what a Championship it could be with the right prize money and promotion Year in year out what a race it could be with all the leading performers from the Caulfield Cup Cox Plate Melbourne Cup
