THE MONTH Posted July 9 2014 Roma E was one of our first members she is now 83 years YOUNG Here is her testimonial I have been coming to the gym since it opened in October 2006 on a continuous membership My original goal was to try something different and have fun I also wanted to slow down an inherited scoliosis of the spine which could eventually cripple me to a point where I could have great difficulty walking Starting with the seniors aerobic class then the Fit For Life program my interest developed into other classes where I have made many friends the social contact being a big part of enjoying fitness The instructors both past and present have all been excellent and a well qualified team always willing to give helpful and constructive advice At present I am doing 5 classes each week and thoroughly enjoy every minute of the time Over recent years I have been hospitalised after an accident undergone chemotherapy had some corrective surgery and continue with physiotherapy for the osteoarthritis of the spine Without regular exercise at the gym and the motivation coming from the group fitness classes I would not be moving much

  • F.I.T Goolwa - The New F word! .......FUNCTIONAL
lift your toddler out of his car seat or hoist the spring water bottle onto the dispenser Functional fitness and functional exercise are the latest gym buzzwords They focus on building a body capable of doing real life activities in real life positions not just lifting a certain amount of weight in an idealized posture created by a gym machine Making Muscles Work Together Conventional weight training isolates muscle groups but it doesn t teach the muscle groups you re isolating to work with others says Greg Roskopf MS a biomechanics consultant with a company called Muscle Activation Techniques who has worked with athletes from the Denver Broncos the Denver Nuggets and the Utah Jazz The key to functional exercise is integration It s about teaching all the muscles to work together rather than isolating them to work independently So what s an example of a functional exercise Think of a bent over row not the kind of row you do on a seated machine but the kind you do leaning over a bench holding the weight in one hand with your arm hanging straight down and then pulling the weight up as your elbow points to the ceiling finishing with your upper arm parallel to the ground That s an exercise that will build the muscles of the back the shoulders the arms and because of its nature will really work your whole body says exercise kinesiologist Paul Chek MSS founder of the Corrective High performance Exercise Kinesiology Institute in California who has advised the Chicago Bulls and the U S Air Force Academy Compare that motion to a carpenter bending over a piece of wood a nurse bending over a bed to transfer a patient or an auto mechanic bending over to adjust your carburetor Anyone doing a

in many cases failed with no thought to life thereafter Others will seek to outsource their body change by signing up for premade delivered meals or shakes until the event or short term goal is reached or in many cases failed with no thought to life thereafter Sadly far too many programs and products place all their emphasis on improving looks and appearances in the short term rather than promoting long term health and happiness It is possible in the short term to improve the way you look but sadly it can be at the expense of how you feel perform and enjoy a balanced life and more importantly your long term health The massive marketing machines that force feed pardon the pun the unsustainable results of these short term programs down our throats create unrealistic expectations and create feelings of failure when you don t see instant dramatic change in your body There are many problems with this approach but in this article I aim to address what in my opinion are the two fundamental problems that lead to so much failure yoyo dieting rebound and frustration Focus Focus on your long term health rather than your short term appearance and you are on the right track after all we all want to look good feel great and move well forever right Embrace behaviours and habits that improve your health remain consistent over time and you WILL build a body you can be proud of Remember this You can t eat like Tarzan and expect to look like Jane and You cannot live like a Sloth and expect to move like a Cheetah Remember it is possible to improve your looks while damaging your health but you will NEVER damage your looks from improving your health Mindset When you
