row Bag in box has been a low and slow player in the Australian environment for many years But in the last couple of years people have seen the benefit of bag in box over the competition As customers come to recognise the many benefits of the system sales can only be expected to continue to grow A major recent achievement has been our work with the McDonalds restaurant chain which includes the development of a specific type of dispenser product which makes the dispensation process very simple and clean McDonalds restaurants use the application for their shakes and smoothies as well as for other products and benefit from the ability to mix and prepare products with as little human intervention as possible keeping the food products fresh and uncontaminated Not only has McDonalds been a happy beneficiary of Rapak s bags but other major restaurant chains dairy providers oil fruit and juice producers and many others have also found an ideal solution in Rapak Whilst the food industry is definitely a focus we also offer a number of innovative solutions and service many customers from different industries including pharmaceutical and chemical Paul says Having an excellent and intelligent product is important for the success of the business As much as you need a credible product you also need good people Paul stresses the importance of all the people involved both the customers and the staff and the connections and relationships that can be forged Relationships are critical in what we do I have a word that I practise all the time and that s called partnering suppliers customers everyone has an equal share in success of the operation This is a practise Paul works toward each day within the company and admits that some may find the idea confusing The lifeblood of any company is its people and it s important to really partner with your own people That may sound silly but it s true Partnering with employees within the company allows everyone to feel valued and involved in the daily operations of the business and creates a greater sense of cooperation and ownership within all levels of the operation When discussing the successes of Rapak s process and products Paul identifies several key contributing factors including the eco friendly nature of the products the aseptic quality of the process portability and the longevity bag in box packaging provides clients Bag in box packaging makes excellent sense in today s world where ecological concerns are very real and clients want to be a part of the green movement Rapak offers a solution that is readily recyclable leaving a very tiny ecologic foot print in the nation s landfills The green aspect or the recycled aspect is very important to us and it is important to customers They are coming to us and asking for it Paul identifies the firm s aseptic guarantee as a great attraction for clients whose products require an entirely sterile environment We have a

mine I am passionate about looking after our people developing them helping them with their careers rewarding them and recognising them Loyal staff that think the world of your company are the best people to talk to your customers Suzanne Grae s target market is not young women they are women of a certain age Carole explains They are women who lead busy lives are very outwardly focused they love fashion but there is a limit to what they are prepared to spend on it They also sometimes have some quite significant body image issues so we have to work very hard on translating current fashion looks into shapes and fabrics that will flatter all ages and sizes The company develops all its own products In the old days when I was buying for department stores we range bought But now you do all of your own development work It is really skilled work but you will still inevitably go into your competitor and see a garment that is very similar to something that you have It is inevitable because we are all using the same influences and inspiration We all do the same research on the internet we are all following the same trends But not significantly using the same suppliers Inevitably there is some overlap but we guard our major supplier jealously We have a wonderful supplier up in China There are major advantages to having a supplier working solely for your brand Carole says It is a very close relationship We have been dealing with these people for 15 years In general she says the relationship between buyer and supplier has changed during her career very much for the better When I first started buying the supplier was in almost an adversarial relationship The only thing that mattered was getting the lowest price out of a manufacturer Nowadays we are working together on the specs for the garment to try and make sure that both businesses can make good profit out of it It is a huge change We ve got some fantastic suppliers and service providers that help us in all sorts of areas whether it is in training and development logistics or fashion and trend information Suzanne Grae operates 210 stores including those in New Zealand where the company is this year taking over the Sussan brand adding another nine outlets in a move due to be completed by August Carole says there is unlikely to be much additional growth in the near future although there are a few centres that we would consider if the price was right She agrees that at the moment there is extreme concern about the rate at which rents are escalating in the context of current retail trade Certainly in the short term we are battening down the hatches I can t see us opening any stores in high profile centres because I just don t think it is going to be financially viable for us to do so

can do well in the short term but we ve been around for a long time and are investing a lot of capital back into the industry so our time horizon is a long one which is reflected in the way we treat people be they customer supplier or employee As is the case for most Australian businesses Primo Smallgoods is facing threats associated with rising labour costs Mr Lederer says that the company has been able to weather this difficulty confiding that We manage this by implementing technology that helps minimise excessive labour as well as by employing the right labour people who possess the skills to do the job efficiently Another pertinent issue for the company is the regulation of raw material costs which are more difficult to control as they are market driven In recent times the volatility of currency markets has made procurement even more difficult for smallgoods companies making it essential for Primo to become especially selective in its business decisions Get it wrong says Mr Lederer and you re at a distinct disadvantage to the market get it right and you might be in front with a slight edge Over the course of a year it generally levels out and we try to do our best to pick the cycle but sometimes especially in recent times you can be right in terms of ex factory pricing but wrong in terms of landed price such is the way the AUD behaves He concludes Our guiding principle is to make the best product in the safest and most hygienic environment at the best cost If we can achieve that then we will truly stand out from the rest by a long way With the company s strong focus on keeping abreast of current technology Mr Lederer says that much of Primo Smallgoods development has been driven by the company s collaboration with machinery manufacturers Every year the company sends a select group of its employees overseas to explore the latest in machinery such that the company may remain at the forefront of the industry Explains Mr Lederer We not only view what they develop but we have input into the development They have the skills and we have the practical knowledge when the two are combined the result is often better than anyone previously expected We ve been growing at quite a rapid pace because we never lose sight of our guiding principle We don t take short cuts we simply make the best product and if we can t do it we won t ever reduce our quality to force a sale The company is currently gearing up for the opening of a brand new facility in Wacol QLD in September of this year This new facility will consolidate three previously established factories into one allowing for more cohesive and cost effective production Alongside this facility will be an on site cold storage and distribution centre It is by far the most significant venture the

of antibacterial hand hygiene sanitisers These act as a showcase of products to show what we are capable of Customers can come to us and purchase under the healthE brand or they can private label that range under their own brand We are a contract manufacturer and that is how we promote ourselves In the past many prospective clients have asked about what Jaychem can do and the own brand range is an answer since obviously the firm cannot show products manufactured for existing clients because of the need for complete discretion and confidentiality The primary focus is on anything in a liquid or a semi solid format which could be a cream an ointment a gel or a paste Jaychem has always offered a complete range of services that include product concepts formulations manufacturing filling packing and full laboratory services Business took a sharp upward curve with the opening of the current premises in 2008 a custom built facility at Manukau 20km south of central Auckland in East Tamaki This is a brilliant location close to the airport and a really good location for doing business The plant comprises an area of about 35 000 square feet completed in May 2008 and the culmination of about five years of planning and about 12 months of construction When the plant was built it was almost as if the company was reborn The family members built this facility with the idea that they could grow into with plenty of capacity accordingly it was planned with the future in mind When you look at the plant from a customer s eye you think wow It really sells the business The Jaychem facility at Manukau is built to GMP industry standards It is all about Standard Operating Procedures As well as this facility Jaychem has put a lot of effort into the unseen items of the business such as quality systems and management and production processes We have really spent a lot of time on documenting and auditing processes and staff training It has been a huge focus of ours to bring our staff up to the highest standard The plant move encouraged a gearshift upwards in terms of workplace culture We had to change the way that all of our team think and operate Team members were encouraged to upskill and staff turnover has been very very low They stay with us and we invest a lot of time and money in training our people Likewise the company s suppliers have been loyal and relationships close In New Zealand this is not a large industry so there are not that many suppliers and we tend to form long term relationships Our suppliers are very willing to go the extra mile to source things or to try something new or to help us out where they see a business opportunity We have suppliers that we have been working with for many years and it is amazing all the different ways you can do
