GECA Good Environmental Choice Australia We were and are still the only blind company to have achieved that environmental accreditation Verosol has adopted many processes that are more environmentally responsible across the board an example being the way colour is applied to the fabrics Traditionally fabrics were coloured using dyes by either yarn dyeing or piece dyeing Instead We transfer print the colour onto a bulk of our fabrics and that is a significantly more sustainable process because you don t get all of this waste product in terms of dyes What customers choose often ends up being more of a window treatment than a window furnishing says Mr Mouret Unobtrusive subtle designs are popular with customers that have beautiful views and really do not want to make a feature of what they are putting on the window Having said that what we are now seeing more and more of in terms of fabric choice is texture Textured fabrics like light jacquards and dobby fabrics and earth tones are in fashion Incorporating texture within blockout fabrics in particular is something that has become a trend over recent years and is developing further If you look at blinds over the last decade there is a strong trend toward contemporary modern design which favours the roller blind in particular This year Verosol is proud to be celebrating 50 years in business and new transparent and blockout fabrics with broader colour palettes to choose from will be launched specifically into the residential apartment market to mark the occasion People often make the mistake of prioritising colour and texture over the required transparency level of the application Interior decorators will generally choose neutral tones like white or cream to co ordinate it with the colour on the walls and architraves The problem is that white is highly reflective and when you put a transparent white blind on a window there can be significant levels of glare It also cuts down your ability to look through that blind adds Mr Mouret If you choose a dark screen in a transparent fabric a charcoal colour for example or even black the view through characteristics of that and the glare reducing properties of that blind will be significantly higher While black screen blinds may sound daunting Mr Mouret assures that during the day the blinds will not appear to be black and emphasises that it is a great option for reducing glare Harry Seidler one of Australia s most iconic architects always specified dark screened blinds in all the houses he designed The downside to a dark screened blind is if it s what I would call a non metallised blind it might be providing you with great view through but it s black It s now sucking the heat in from outside and re radiating it in the room That s the advantage of metallisation because you can have dark screen rollers with fantastic view through properties but the metallised backing is reflecting the heat out

today is that they are looking to be more streamlined they are looking to reduce costs they are looking to get to the market faster remain competitive to retain and grow market share They are looking for more options around pay as you go through outsourcing IT functions normally done in house to the Cloud provider As part of that now we re seeing growth in cloud services like Google Applications Microsoft 365 we re seeing things like HR systems being outsourced online so that companies don t need to have administrative HR overhead We re seeing things like Enterprise Resource Planning or companies that are getting their accounting package online so they don t have to buy it up front and manage the server and things like that Uecomm s new service packages will address all these areas as well as cloud services Access to a cloud service is an extremely useful resource for any small business because it can put software as a service at the fingertips of the employees Instead of having to go out and shop for a program it can be as simple as downloading a small application and then paying per use instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a program that may only be used once a year The other plus is that any and all personal data can be securely stored and backed up on the cloud making access easy from anywhere in the world A connection to a Cloud provider can provide this type of service a very valuable opportunity for any up and coming company to reduce start up costs A challenge however with Australian companies using Cloud providers for data storage is that the majority of available cloud information is stored overseas and sometimes in emerging countries This can be a problem for those who need their data to be stored within Australia for issues related to data sovereignty as there may be specific regulation that prevents storing personal data offshore or concerns with security Having data stored locally means access to that data securely and consistently fast Uecomm says Patrick will soon become a number one choice for these companies because of the relationships we have with Australian based Cloud services partners The company also understands what its customers are looking for Our vision in terms of where we want to go is we want to build an environment that enables business customers to be more effective and efficient no matter what they do It s because of the commoditisation of the network and the consumerisation of IT that there is demand for more transaction orientated businesses services to have a higher level of self service becoming a one stop shop type of concept will become more popular That means the technical complexity of delivering the service won t be visible to the end user as this will be automated in our network or in our provider s environment so that overall this will make things seamless and

business has also successfully retained its family atmosphere with Simon s son Tom taking the company forward as General Manager Manufacturing in house has also enabled the company to be at the leading edge of industry innovations In fact innovation has been a hallmark of the company from the beginning We were absolutely relentless with early innovation because there were really no known solar pool heating products at the time One had to experiment on the run and if something proved to be successful it would be adopted whether that be in the design of the equipment the way it was installed or the way it was sold So we were incredibly innovative To this day Sunbather enjoys a reputation as the most progressive and innovative solar pool heating company in Australia Innovations Sunbather has made a number of innovative contributions to the industry The first was to introduce flexible tubing as a viable solar collector material in place of the standard copper or steel Switching to the less expensive plastic provided the industry with much needed cost savings that could then be passed on to the consumer The industry would not have taken off if the cost of the collector had not come down dramatically Mr Boadle says The second crucial innovation was to pioneer a solar heating system that was simple and easy to install This required working completely outside of a pool s pumping and filtration system An interconnected system is far too complicated for the mass market Mr Boadle explains The team worked with pool builders to educate them on the value of preinstalling a separate flow and return pipe in every pool they constructed regardless of whether or not a solar heater was being installed As a result it became standard for builders to include the foundational plumbing needed for a solar heating system That got the concept of solar pool heating to the customer very easily Then the builders began to include the solar heating systems in their contract The pool builders became our best salesmen Then we had massive growth Sunbather s next two major innovations were driven by aesthetics In the late 1990s people began to shy away from having an unattractive black collector on their roof In response the company began manufacturing coloured collectors We sold very heavily on the concept that the solar collector could blend into the colour of the roof Mr Boadle remembers Because we were extruding our own products in house we could actually change from one colour to another very quickly So if we got an order for a green solar collector or terra cotta solar collector we could produce it very quickly and install it because we were vertically integrated That was a little bit more difficult for our competition at the time because they had to buy in bulk from a contract extruder Around the same time the team developed a way to flatten the collector so that it was not nearly as visible

55 per cent The no go fishing zones according to the government will take no more that 5 per cent off the fishing grounds What has actually happened however is that the government has targeted the best fishing areas in the Northern Zone catastrophic for commercial fishing Debra emphasises how important the proper management of the fishery is to conserve the stock and protect the environment It s not like a paddock that you can just fish equally so it s very very important that you fish in certain areas and then you rest them The government she explains has ignored science and reasoning in this realm and will be putting a massive strain on the fishery What they ve done is they ve actually locked up all our hotspots which means we ll be forced to fish in areas where it s not very productive In this particular situation these no go fishing zones are a bad idea It s like putting your sheep into a paddock and just leaving them there indefinitely and not moving them or rotating them Australia is already third in the world for marine parks behind New Zealand and Canada It s not so much the marine parks that we re against it s the no go fishing zones says Debra who says that Australian fishing companies are in fact by and large environmentally sensitive conservationists Kangaroo Island has a population of 4000 people and just recently 1500 people rallied in support of commercial fishing companies It was amazing to watch the support from the community toward primary producers and family business The Australian fishing industry is world renowned for sustainability having garnered many international awards We pay licence fees every year to the fisheries management and they re considerable 26 000 per licence per year and that is to make sure that the fishery is sustainable says Debra It is a highly regulated industry that produces some of the world s best seafood Debra believes that if the government were serious about looking after the fishery it would look at chemical drain off and all the other factors that could be a threat rather than ruthlessly imposing no go fishing zones Although Ferguson Australia has consulted with the government extensively over marine parks and no go fishing zones the lack of regard as to what impacts the move will have on the fishing industry and local economies has been frustrating Value Adding Working in a family fishing business is not just a job it is a way of life according to Debra She advises the politicians behind implementing the no go fishing zones to take a good long look at the effect it is going to have right down the chain When they make this decision and put these no go zones into place it will be locked in for ten years she explains It will be very difficult to try to undo the effects of the move and it will spell disaster

shipping facilities was deemed uneconomical so the decision was made in 1971 to sell off all divisions save the Customs Division and to revert to Customs and Clearance Agents Known as Clarke Coulson Pty Ltd from 1981 to 1983 the company was renamed Clarke Customs Pty Ltd a name it held from 1983 to 2010 when Jason Kline was appointed and the business was renamed Clarke Global Logistics Pty Ltd The move was one to keep up with client demand Incorporating Logistics into the name has opened up a lot of other areas for us says Mr Kline By limiting ourselves to customs we felt that we were doing ourselves a disservice if you like Logistics is a such a broad word and takes in much more than Customs Clearance we provide many other services and this is the direction that our industry has taken In this day and age to experience growth within your business solely doing what you have done for the last 95 years is nearly impossible you must go and mix it with the big companies and offer a fully integrated Door to Door Service says Mr Kline Our expansion into international freight over the last 10 years has been pivotal to our growth We have been extremely fortunate to have had a strong existing clientele to begin with and having invested into a new website and web approach has internationally also been extremely important Through this approach the company has built international contacts and agency agreements which has meant it can remain competitively priced and provide service to its clients globally Our imports from China to Australia remain our largest trade lane however we have seen a general increase on Imports and Exports to all trade areas Another advantage with doing business internationally is that it has opened us up to cross trade movements that don t come from Australia we still have maximum control of cargo but we just never see it Partnerships You can t be in business for such a long period of time without having great support and partnerships and this includes existing clients and third party service providers Says Mr Kline We value these as partnerships and do whatever possible to ensure our service adds value to our clients and service providers businesses also Our oldest client still operating with us goes back to the early 1920s Mr Chris Wang and his family and forefathers began business with us and grew to become David Wang Imports They were one of the first major importers from China and their company became a backbone of our business through the 1950s to 1980s Along with the amount of people Chris has referred to our business he has been a true friend of ours over many many decades Secon Logistics is another who as a provider of Transport Services have been a great ally of Clarke Global s for over 20 years It s amazing how clients remember the last leg of the service
